Kneeling Soldier at Fort Campbell, Kentucky
Description
"Presented to the Fort Campbell community in August 1968 by Meyer Brick, proprietor of Brick’s Army/Navy Store.Wickham’s kneeling soldier now stands outside Soldier’s Chapel on the Army Post. Family records indicate that the statue was commissioned by Mr. Glen Koons, the Curator of Heritage Hall, the Army museum at Ft. Campbell. To help add to the life-like quality of the statue, Wickham posed a soldier in the desired stance and had a photograph made. From a distance the work does not look like a product of Wickham’s hand. The rifle’s intricate detail suggests that it was cast from an actual rifle, as was perhaps the soldier’s helmet. However, the planar treatment of the soldier’s face does reveal Wickham’s touch. As with Wickham’s World War II Memorial, the Army participated in dedicating this statue, but this time the dedication took place not at the Wickham site on Buck Smith Road but at the post itself. Photographs of the event show an Army band playing, and Wickham, Brick and Army dignitaries in attendance." -quoted text is from the 2001 Customs House Museum Online Wickham Exhibit. Fort Campbell, Kentucky, USA is the home of the 101st Airborne Division, nicknamed the Screaming Eagles. |
